Biography
Ceramicist Hiromi Itabashi has an oeuvre that could easily be mistaken for soft sculpture, as the whimsical shapes he creates contain an elegance seeming free of any hardness. A modernist approach to the usage of traditional materials, Itabashi works mainly with white porcelain and chamotte, a kind of clay used as raw material for ceramics. The use of these contrasting materialities allows for freer play of shapes and form.
He complicates established notions of horizontality and verticality, pushing the boundaries for how we can consider those modes of being when viewed side by side.
He has held a various number of solo exhibitions throughout Japan, and has taught at multiple universities throughout the country.
