Biography

Unryuan is a lacquer workshop founded by Tatsuo Kitamura (1952-) in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Five to ten craftsmen are involved in one work, and the beauty and precision of the work, which requires a production period of five years for long ones, and the lacquer work from the Edo period to the Meiji period, which was a lost technology in modern times. Due to the high reproducibility of the work, the work of Unryuan is often described as "transcendental skill".

 

In 2002, in recognition of its advanced skills, Unryuan held a first solo exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and made a brilliant debut overseas.
