With the world currently facing great hardship,

I find myself retreating to my studio more than usual,

working with my brushes everyday in an effort to overcome my fears.

My body is filled with various sensations as I paint petals,

one by one, as if dedicating my soul to prayer.

I am unable to do anything to help, but as a painter,

I believe that art will bring a faint ray of light into people’s hearts.

I am very grateful for this opportunity to show my work

at the Ginza Ippodo Gallery and I hope that people will come

and see it, while taking all necessary precautions

    to look after themselves.

  • A Paean to Life

I have decided to refer to Nakano Daisuke as a Reiwa period eshi. The term eshi is generally used to describe the artists of the Edo period, but of all the painters who work in the nihon-ga style, he is the first truly contemporary artist to appear and I think it extremely meaningful that his exhibition, A Paean to Life, is to be held at the Ginza Ippodo Gallery in May.

2020 began peacefully in Japan; it was the year that the Tokyo Olympic Games were due to be held and it also marked the beginning of the Reiwa Era under the new Emperor; two auspicious events that brought great joy to the country. Soon afterwards, however, Covid-19 pandemic appeared, shaking the world and reminding people of the transience of life. As a result, the Olympic Games have been postponed for one year, and the gentle people of Japan are left wondering how they are going to live their lives in the future.

Daisuke Nakano starts each morning with a prayer at his family shrine. He believes that the natural beauty of the Japan’s four seasons is guarded by the gods, and he holds all living things in respect and awe, praying as he pours his soul into his work. The animals that fill his works overflow with vitality and we can almost hear their pulse, his ‘paean to life’ reminding us of what is important.

I hope that Daisuke Nakano’s dazzling paintings will fill Japan with light, providing the strength and courage to give the Japanese people hope for the future. This is what will happen…I am sure of it.
