The resonating sound of a mantra.
The sky and sea form a screen closing off the mouth of the cave.
The Milky Way rotates slowly as the moon waxes and wanes.
The sun rises up out of the waves, the stars melting into the sky until only Venus remains.
Our hearts rise up into the sky to blend with the light,
Allowing us to comprehend ourselves as being a small part of something greater.

‘Good Morning Ken’, in his latter years Seizo Hayashiya began his day with a morning call to
Matsubara Ken.
Having been challenged with the subject of ‘Kūkai’ by Mr. Hayashiya, Matsubara traveled to
Mikurodo Cave in Kochi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku where the priest, Kūkai, is said to
have lived, in order to produce paintings of ‘sky and sea’ and ‘sun and moon’, from the same
perspective that Kūkai himself would have seen them.
In October 2019 Ippodo Gallery New York celebrated its 13th year by moving to a new gallery
in the Upper East Side on 67th Street and holding Matsubara Ken’s outstanding ‘KŪKAI: Sun
and Moon’ exhibition, consisting of works produced with painstaking labor. Visitors to this event
were delighted to have been able to come into contact with the spirit of the Japanese people and
Japanese culture.
Six months later came the shock of a new coronavirus.
As the world undergoes huge change, Ginza Ippodo will hold a noteworthy event.
Matsubara Ken will make a triumphal return with this exhibition and we would like to offer him
our applause and gratitude here in Ginza.
We hope that you will be able to attend and witness Kūkai’s world, set amid the scenery of Japan.

The Kuroshio Current that flows along Japan’s south-eastern coastline creates powerful eddies
around the sunken rocks while the raging waves thunder against the coast, raising fine spray.
The sun rises in the sky, day by day, while at night the silver light of the moon shines through the darkness as it waxes and wanes.

We can almost hear the crashing of the waves as the sun and moon climb into the limitless skies.
We can also experience the flash of light from Venus that was to shock Kūkai into enlightenment.
